Donna helps out with a local carnival because they want to help make a difference

Hayle, England
I’ve been helping to organise the Hayle Carnival for several years now. We hold the carnival twice a year, in the summer and in the winter and the local community takes part in a magical lantern parade.

I was watching the carnival one summer with my children and a friend and we decided to join the committee and help. I’m shy but I plucked up the courage and everyone I have met is lovely. I wanted to help them and make a difference. I help out with lots of different things such as taking minutes at meetings, printing posters, designing carnival floats, working with local schools and looking after the carnival’s social media page.
Since being on the committee, my proudest moment has been seeing how popular the carnival has grown, last year there were over 35 floats the most there has been in a long time. Looking behind I couldn’t see the end of the carnival, there were hundreds of people and it was amazing to see that many people in Hayle.
Because of lockdown the carnival hasn’t been able to take place this year, but we are already working on a plan for next year to make it even bigger and better.
I love making things and organising, it’s not a big commitment. I love doing it, it’s a good way to meet new people and make a difference in the community.
